In this unit I learned that the Underground Railroad helped the slaves from Africa escape to Canada from slavery in the United Sates. Canada was the land of freedom for it did not use slaves to do work. The United states imported African people on ships where they were normally tied to an object, mostly a bed. The only way to escape was to jump off the boat but a lot of people did not jump off because the Americans would throw meat/blood in the water to make sharks follow the boat. When they got to America they had a chance to escape during the night. If they did they would follow the North Star ( on the handle of the Little Dipper), the slaves would normally be led by a conductor who showed them the way to go. Along the way they would come encounter with safe houses which would give them food, supplies, sleep etc. They were around 10-20 miles apart and they had a quilt on their porch to represent that they were a safe house. The slaves would travel by boat or train but sometimes they had to pay to get on. Luckily the safe houses would sometimes supply some change.
The Underground Railroad wasn't actually a railroad. It was a secret network of people who helped the slaves have a chance at freedom which operated from around the time of 1830-1865. The Quakers were one of the biggest helps because they too felt unappreciated. Also Harriet Tubman was a slave who freed herself and she continued to help the slaves escape.
P.S Did you know that the slaves could not be called their actual name because the Americans said they weren't human beings?
