In this unit I learned a lot about Chlamydia. I learned that Chlamydia is the number 1 bacterial sexually transmitted disease in Canada. They also call Chlamydia the "silent" disease because most people who get it have no symptoms. Chlamydia infects the cervix and the urethra, it can also spread to the Fallopian tubes which can lead to infertility. Both men and women can also get Chlamydia in the rectum. Untreated Chlamydia in women can also make you have a bigger chance of ectopic pregnancy ( pregnancy outside the womb) and pelvic inflammatory disease. Chlamydia can also be transferred to a baby during childbirth, the baby can receive conjunctivitis and pneumonia. Untreated Chlamydia in men can cause: sterility, Epididymitis and Reiter's Syndrome. Chlamydia is easily transferable, but it mostly occurs in women under the age of 30. Chlamydia can easily be prevented; to prevent it, you can: get tested for an infection annually, wear condoms during sexual intercourse and get your partner tested.
